Oksana Chivi: “Strength does not Lie in in never getting tired, but in continuing to move forward.”
Аs part of the “Portrait of a Modern Woman” project, the international magazine MILLENIUM CLUB introduces readers to women whose stories inspire and remind us of the value of life, freedom of choice and belief in one’s own strength. Oksana Chivi shares her experiences, talking about living with multiple sclerosis, important decisions, inner strength and every woman’s right to remain true to herself.
— Oksana, welcome, and we’re delighted to see you again. What does being a modern woman mean to you?
— For me, a modern woman is a woman who allows herself to be different: strong when she needs to be, vulnerable when she wants support, active when she has the energy, and simply herself — without needing to prove anything to anyone. It’s about the right to choose her own path, to grow, to look after herself, to fulfil her dreams and, at the same time, to accept herself just as she is today.
— What has your experience of living with multiple sclerosis taught you?
— Multiple sclerosis has taught me not to put my life ‘off until later’. Over the years I’ve lived with this diagnosis, I’ve realised that strength doesn’t lie in never getting tired or never feeling afraid. Strength lies in carrying on, even when the path is difficult. I’ve learnt to listen to myself more, to look after my health and to cherish the freedom to do what I enjoy. And I certainly won’t let my diagnosis define who I am.
— What led you to the decision about stem cells transplantation?
— It took me nearly ten years to reach the decision to undergo a transplant. I read extensively, consulted with doctors, analysed the possibilities, and spent a long time weighing the pros and cons. For me, it wasn’t a spontaneous decision – it was a conscious step that I was ready to take. I am very glad that, today, more opportunities for modern medical care are emerging in Ukraine, and that patients have access to more information and options to choose from in consultation with their doctors.
— How important is it to take an active part in your own life?
— I believe this is extremely important. Patients have the right to ask their doctor questions, seek information, seek a second opinion and talk about what is worrying them. I have been doing exactly that myself for many years. My community work has also grown out of this experience: I want people with MS to be aware of their options and not be afraid to stand up for their own needs. Taking an active stance isn’t about controlling everything, but about taking part in your own life.
— What would you say to a woman who lacks confidence in her own strength?
— I would tell her: don’t ask yourself to be strong every day. Allow you to get tired, ask for help and take breaks. But don’t give up on yourself and your dreams. I have lived with MS for over twenty years and know that life can change very unexpectedly. But even in difficult circumstances, we still have the right to choose, love, dream, develop, be beautiful, make plans and enjoy life.
Appreciate every day. A great life arises from small moments of love, faith and hope, and a person’s true legacy is the goodness they leave behind.
