MILLENIUM CLUB

Yuliia Draiuk: Ukraine, Embroidered for the World

When living far from one’s homeland, one feels the value of what is truly one’s own with particular intensity. Language, traditions, and symbols familiar since childhood take on a new resonance. For Yuliia Draiuk, embroidery became that vital link to Ukraine. Today, living in Estonia, the artisan not only preserves Ukrainian tradition but also gives it a modern expression, introducing it to people far beyond Ukraine’s borders through her work.

Yuliia has already developed her own distinctive creative style. It is instantly recognisable in her embroidered pendants, chokers, headbands, accessories, and décor items – including Christmas ornaments. Here, Ukrainian embroidery transcends traditional fabric to become part of an everyday look.
A vibrant poppy might adorn a choker, or a delicate embroidered motif might feature on a pendant that pairs effortlessly with a sweater and a denim jacket. Handcrafted artistry becomes a detail of a modern wardrobe – the very element that transforms an ordinary look into something peculiar.
And this is precisely where Yuliia’s signature style as an artisan shines through: she does not merely copy the past – she engages in a dialogue with it.

Wearable Culture
Living abroad changed Yuliia’s geography, but it did not alter the cultural identity of her work. On the contrary, the distance imbued it with new meaning.
When the Ukrainian artisan’s creations reach people in different countries, a small piece of Ukraine travels with them. For some, it is a reminder of their own roots. For others, it is a first introduction to Ukrainian embroidery. And for some, it is simply a beautiful object that eventually opens the door to an entire culture.
This is how the soft power of art works: without loud declarations or lengthy explanations. Beauty captures attention first, followed by questions: what does this symbol mean? Where does this technique come from? What is the story behind it?
And in this way, Ukraine gains another conversation partner..

Tradition Without Museum Glass
What makes Yuliia’s work particularly valuable is that she does not turn tradition into an untouchable museum piece; in her hands, embroidery lives alongside the modern woman.
It can be worn with jeans, given as a gift to a loved one, or added to an autumn outfit. It can even be used to decorate a home or a Christmas tree.
While her product range expands and new shapes and ideas emerge, the essential element remains constant: the work is handmade. In a world of mass production, knowing that an item was created by a specific person—stitch by stitch—is a rare luxury.
For Yuliia herself, it is also a way to stay close to Ukraine, regardless of the distance separating her from home.

The Woman Who Creates Her Own
Behind every handmade brand lies far more than the customer sees. There is the search for ideas and materials, hours of painstaking work, photography, customer communication, packaging, and shipping—along with the need to start each new piece from a blank slate.
Yuliia embodies both the artisan and the modern woman building her own business far from her home country. She experiments, expands her product range, conducts workshops, and shares her skills with others.
Perhaps that is precisely why her work fits so naturally into the «Names of the Modern World» series. Today, there are many ways to represent one’s country; Yuliia does so with a needle and thread.
She does not simply take a piece of Ukraine with her; she allows that piece of Ukraine to travel further—to other cities, countries, homes, and people.

From the Editorial Board of MILLENIUM CLUB

In today’s world, a reputation is built not on noise, but on what a person leaves behind. Yuliia Draiuk leaves behind small traces of Ukraine – both where her works are created and wherever they travel next.
Hers is the story of a woman who transformed her love for tradition into a unique creative language; of an artisan for whom Ukrainian culture knows no borders; and of a thoroughly modern way to share Ukraine with the world – through beauty one wants to keep close at hand.
