When the Law Serves Freedom Iryna Odyntsova on Human Rights Protection in Ukraine and the International Recognition of a Human Rights Mission

— Ms. Odyntsova, how did you come to international law and human rights advocacy? Why did you choose this particular field?
— I have always been interested in law and justice, but the understanding that I could be effective at the international level came with time. After the outbreak of the armed conflict in 2014, it became evident that human rights issues had taken on a global dimension. Working with international organizations revealed how much still needed to be done. From that moment on, I focused my efforts on human rights protection, especially in the context of war.
— You are often regarded as a symbol of the fight for human rights. What principle is central to your work?
— For me, justice and the rule of law are paramount. The law is a tool to protect those who are most vulnerable—women, children, and victims of violence. My goal is for legal assistance to bring real change: to restore safety, dignity, and hope. In today’s Ukrainian reality, every victory is a challenge that requires courage, strategic thinking, and resilience.
— You are sometimes compared to Amal Clooney. How do you feel about that?
— Her example is inspiring. She combines professionalism, deep legal expertise, and an active civic stance, ensuring that the world hears about human rights violations. My mission is to ensure that the voices of Ukrainians who have suffered are also heard—that even in times of war, there is no oblivion, only action.
— How do you see the future of Ukraine in the context of human rights?
— I am convinced that even under such difficult conditions, Ukraine is capable of becoming an example to the world. A state that respects human rights during wartime is a strong state. I strive to ensure that no violation goes unnoticed and that every person knows: their rights matter.
— What are the main challenges facing human rights defenders today?
— The greatest challenge is maintaining an effective legal system during wartime. We face an enormous number of violations of fundamental rights—the right to life, security, medical care, and education. It is also crucial to maintain links with international courts and prevent isolation. We need international support, a strong legal framework, and sustainable protection mechanisms both in Ukraine and beyond its borders.

From the MILLENIUM CLUB editors:
We sincerely thank Ms. Iryna Odyntsova for this profound and candid conversation. Her example inspires not only fellow legal professionals but everyone who seeks justice within Ukrainian society.
We wish you continued inner strength, professional achievements, and genuine support on a path where every protected voice helps change the world.
With faith in justice, Editorial Team of the international magazine MILLENIUM CLUB
